Bupropion is used for treating depression.
Cost of bupropion xl 150 mg /day for 8 weeks. These doses are recommended in light of the pharmacokinetic profile bupropion and lack of significant tolerance after treatment, and because of the lack efficacy for primary goal.
The treatment was well tolerated with few or no adverse effects. A single dose of bupropion (150 mg/day) was associated with a single increase in total serum cholesterol of 1.7 mg/dL and 0.2 mg/dL, respectively. The incidence of side effects was higher in females when compared to male subjects. The highest incidence of side effects reported was headaches at doses above 80 mg, and the incidence of discontinuation due to adverse events was reported at doses above 80 mg (p<0.001) but not above 90 mg (p=0.25).
There was a significant increase in plasma testosterone and estradiol with bupropion treatment, reaching a maximum of 8.1 and 8.4 ng/dL, respectively. The incidence rate of serious side effects was similar for each treatment group, with serious gastrointestinal upset at doses exceeding 80 mg and severe dizziness at doses greater than 120 mg. In addition bupropion was associated with increased incidence of sexual dysfunction (p_0.05).
Based on the high incidence of side effects and the lack of efficacy in primary goal this trial, it was concluded that bupropion is unlikely to be an optimal antidepressant for men, at least with regard to treatment of depressive symptoms.

Although bupropion is not yet approved for the treatment of depression, several recent small studies have demonstrated that it is effective in the maintenance treatment of bupropion 150 mg cost depressive symptoms. These studies have shown that there are substantial improvements in clinical symptoms, anxiety and cognitive performance, mood, when compared to placebo (5-8 mg/day) with bupropion at 5 mg/day showing a more variable effect profile, in particular with respect to efficacy.
However, none of these studies have shown long-term efficacy beyond 8 weeks to treat chronic depressive symptoms. In addition, many of the short-term trials have included patients with severe depressive symptoms for which bupropion treatment would not provide benefit. Thus, until the full potential of bupropion is appreciated the use of this medication in the maintenance treatment of depression needs to be accompanied by an understanding of its pharmacology and the risks side effects related to use. 3 Pharmacodynamics
3.5 Pharmacodynamic properties of naltrexone
When compared with placebo, a range of CNS symptoms such as somnolence and insomnia are typically seen in a large proportion of naltrexone responders. The majority, however, report improved mood, social adjustment, or energy levels. In the context of depression, mood symptoms are often the primary benefit and side effect of naltrexone (in some cases also bupropion) (Table 13).
This variability may be a source of the variation in reported efficacy of both naltrexone and bupropion. It is also likely that other factors than mood may influence the response of people to naltrexone or bupropion (e.g. pain, sexual dysfunction).
In the short term, reported efficacy of naltrexone and bupropion appears limited, with the latter having an advantage in terms of side effects. Indeed bupropion is an FDA-approved first-line treatment for opioid-use disorders; naltrexone is not. However, in the long term, naltrexone may hold an important advantage.
